The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will observe a daylong fast on April 7 to demonstrate their objection to the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate in a case related to money laundering associated with the now scrapped Delhi excise policy.
Senior AAP leader Gopal Rai stated that party members and leaders will convene at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and Khatkar Kalan in Punjab, the birthplace of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, to participate in the collective fast.
All AAP MLAs, office-bearers will start gathering at Jantar Mantar for the mass fasting from 11 am.
Security has been heightened along the roads leading to the protest site as the police prepare for a huge turnout. Traffic may also be hit in parts of central Delhi due to heavy barricading.
“Those who are against the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal, who want to save the country’s democracy, and stop injustice and dictatorship, are urged to observe collective fasts in their homes, villages, neighbourhoods, block headquarters, tehsils, districts, and state capitals,” he said.
He said the party would be observing the nationwide collective fast to garner maximum support from the public for Kejriwal’s fight.
The AAP supremo was arrested last month by the ED in an excise policy-linked money laundering case. He has been sent to judicial custody till April 15.
In a show of strength, the Opposition bloc held a mega rally in Delhi's Ramlila Maidan last Sunday, accusing the BJP of decimating the Opposition through the Central investigative agencies.
The party has maintained that there will be no change in the leadership, even if that means Mr Kerjriwal functions as the Chief Minister from the prison. The BJP., meanwhile, has termed Mr Kejriwal's "work from jail plan" a sham.
