Tata Power will develop a 700 megawatt (MW) wind energy project in Andhra Pradesh, senior state government officials said on August 12.
"The project will be developed in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh and would be connected to the central grid (substation owned by central transmission utility). It would generate 1840 million units per year," said one official from the Andhra Pradesh government.
The Rs 6,000 crore project is part of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Tata Power and the Andhra Pradesh government in which the company plans to build renewable energy capacities up to a capacity of 7000 MW. The MoU was signed in the presence of Andhra Pradesh's industries minister Nara Lokesh in March, 2025.
Official said the turbines will not just be 'Made in India', but 'Made in Andhra Pradesh' too. "Tata Power has inked a pact to buy wind turbines from Suzlon energy. The turbines would be made in Suzlon's factory in Andhra Pradesh that has now been revamped and re-commenced production since 2024," the official said.
This will be the first wind project in Andhra Pradesh since 2019.

Andhra Pradesh is actively pursuing renewable energy development to address multiple strategic, economic, and environmental objectives. The state, rich in terms of renewable energy sources and potential as per studies by the Union government, currently has an installed clean energy capacity of just 9 gigawatts (GW). In comparison, neighbouring states such as Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have hit capacities of about 23 GW. The incumbent Andhra chief minister, N Chandrababu Naidu, has often blamed his predecessor YS Jagan Mohan Reddy for “taking the power sector backwards” in the state.
According to analysts, policy reviews in the power sector by the Reddy government had put at risk about 5.2 GW of solar and wind power projects, compelling 14 major renewable energy companies, including ACME Solar, ReNew Power, Greenko Holding, Axis Wind farms, Azure Power and Mytrah, to exit the state.
In October, 2024, Naidu released the ‘Andhra Pradesh Integrated Clean Energy Policy’, the guidelines for which were issued in March this year. The five-year plan aims to add over 160 GW of renewable energy capacity, with a potential to attract investments worth Rs 10 lakh crore, and generating direct or indirect employment for about 7.5 lakh people.
It involves large-scale promotion of renewable energy, pumped storage plants, and green hydrogen and its derivatives.
Tata Power has announced it will invest Rs 49,000 crore to build up to 7 GW of solar, wind and hybrid projects under the state's Integrated Clean Energy Policy.
