The Border Security Force (BSF) has launched a massive security drive, codenamed “Operation Alert”, along both the Indo-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya and the Indo-Pakistan border in Rajasthan to ensure airtight security in the run-up to Independence Day.
In Meghalaya, the operation—underway from August 10 to 16—is being executed in close coordination with the state police and other enforcement agencies. Additional troops have been deployed at forward locations, with senior officers from Frontier and Sector headquarters camping at the border to directly oversee the mission. The measures include intensified area domination, round-the-clock patrolling, surprise naka checks, and riverine surveillance using night-vision equipment and mobile patrol units. Special focus is on plugging vulnerable land and water routes to curb cattle smuggling, contraband trafficking, and illegal crossings.
Meanwhile, along the Rajasthan frontier, “Operation Alert” began on August 11 and will continue until midnight of August 17. BSF units are conducting rigorous patrols, tactical drills, and reviews of standard operating procedures (SOPs) to counter potential threats. “Our effort is to evaluate all inputs from across the border, monitor threats, and neutralise them. We are also rehearsing and refining our SOPs to meet emerging challenges,” said BSF DIG (Sector South) MK Negi. Advanced surveillance gadgets have been deployed to track cross-border activities, with real-time intelligence feeding into counter-planning measures.
Inspector General OP Upadhyay of BSF Shillong stressed that “Operation Alert” reflects the force’s unwavering commitment to national security during the festive season, ensuring no scope for disruption by hostile elements. The operation will maintain an enhanced security grid across both frontiers until its conclusion.
