The attack by the separatist group reportedly came after a protest turned violent in Brampton. According to a video, a group of Khalistani extremists held a protest that was met with a counter-protest by a group displaying Indian flags in opposition to the extremists' ideology. Tensions quickly escalated, resulting in violent clashes between the two groups.

The Ministry categorically stated that the outreach of mission's consular officers to provide services to Indians and Canadian citizens alike will not be deterred by intimidation, harassment and violence.
