AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi has fiercely criticized BJP MPs Nishikant Dubey and Dinesh Sharma for their comments about the Supreme Court, cautioning that such remarks pose a risk to the very structure of Indian democracy.
"You are not very bright, and you resemble a brand of soft drink,” the Hyderabad MP said, ridiculing the BJP politicians for what he deemed an irresponsible attack on the judiciary. “Are you threatening the courts? Article 142 was introduced by BR Ambedkar, who had far more foresight than you.”
Owaisi also directed a stern message to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Your associates are so extreme that they are threatening the courts. Modi ji, if you don’t rein in these individuals, the nation will be weakened — and it will not forget you.”
These remarks were triggered by Dubey’s incendiary statement suggesting that Parliament and state assemblies should be dissolved if the Supreme Court is to make all decisions. “The top court has a singular motive: ‘Show me the face, and I will show you the law’,” Dubey declared to ANI, accusing the judiciary of overstepping its boundaries and igniting religious discord.
Dubey also took issue with the court’s earlier ruling on decriminalizing homosexuality and questioned its authority to impose deadlines on the President or Governors regarding re-passed Bills — as seen in a recent landmark ruling. Dinesh Sharma from the BJP stated that “no one can challenge the President” and referred to her as the “supreme” authority.
Owaisi was not the only one denouncing the statements. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh accused the government of attempting to “diminish the Supreme Court” due to its recent decisions — especially concerning electoral bonds and delays in legislation that contradicted the Centre’s interests.
On Saturday, Dubey asserted that the Supreme Court of India is to blame for 'provoking religious conflicts' in the nation, suggesting that if the apex court is to legislate, then Parliament should be closed down.
“The top court has only one aim: 'Show me the face, and I will show you the law'. The Supreme Court is overstepping its bounds. If one has to refer every issue to the Supreme Court, then Parliament and State Assemblies should be disbanded,” Dubey communicated to the media.
He further claimed that "Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, is accountable for all the civil strife occurring in this country."
In response to the growing criticism, BJP president JP Nadda stated that the party “entirely disapproves” of the comments made by Dubey and Sharma, urging all leaders to refrain from making such statements. “The judiciary is a vital pillar of our democracy,” Nadda stated in a post on X.
Dubey's remarks surfaced during the ongoing proceedings in the Supreme Court regarding multiple petitions questioning the constitutionality of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.
Notably, the Centre reassured the Supreme Court during the April 17 hearing that it would not denotify any 'Waqf-by-user' provisions and would not appoint non-Muslim members to the Board. This assurance followed the top court's indication that it would contemplate staying certain aspects of the law.
