On this day in 1953, Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first people to scale the summit of Mount Everest, the world’s tallest mountain.

The Government of India conferred on Hillary its second highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan, posthumously, in 2008.
