A 19-year-old college student died after his girlfriend's mother allegedly assaulted him with a cricket bat. The attack took place when the youth paid a visit to the girl's family in Telangana's Sangareddy district.
The victim, Jyothi Sravan Sai, was invited by the girl's mother and other family members to discuss their relationship and marriage. During the meeting, an argument ensued and the girl's mother allegedly started beating her. When Sravan intervened, she attacked him as well with a cricket bat.
The youth sustained a severe head injury, leading to his death. He also suffered fractures to his leg and ribs. Sreeja, who suffered a fracture and a head injury, has been admitted to a hospital, police said.
According to a report in TOI, argument broke out after the girl informed her mother of her pregnancy. "The girl's mother confronted Sravan over the pregnancy. She grabbed a cricket bat and began hitting her. When Sravan intervened to protect his girlfriend, he was also beaten," it said quoting Ameenpur police.
Sravan and Sreeja had known each other since class 10 and were in a relationship, which the girl's mother was opposed to. The girl's family had even warned the victim multiple times in the past. However, the Sravan and Sreeja continued to see each other.
The youth was pursuing Computer Science and Engineering at St Peter's Engineering College in Maisammaguda, while the girl was studying for a degree at another college.
A case of murder and attempt to murder has been registered.
