Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has pressed Russia to expedite the supply of two remaining units of S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile systems.
Russia has already completed supplies of the first three regiments of the missile systems. There has been a delay in supply of the remaining units in view of the Ukraine conflict, according to reports.
During his meeting with his Russian counterpart Andrey Belousov in Moscow, Singh showcased new opportunities in India for Russian defence industries in joint production of various military hardware. Singh also said that India-Russia engagement is very strong, and it has lived up to the "responsibilities" of a special and privileged strategic partnership.
The meeting was held under the framework of India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military and Military Technical Cooperation and was co-chaired by Singh and Belousov.
What is the S-400 Triumf missile system?
The Russian S-400 is considered one of the world's most advanced air-defense systems. Known to NATO as the SA-21 Growler, Russia's S-400 Triumf is a long-range, road-mobile surface-to-air missile system. It was designed to target missiles and aircraft, but it can also be used for surface-to-surface strikes. It first became operational in 2007 and is considered Russia's equivalent of the US Patriot system.
How does the S-400 system work?
Its long-range surveillance radar tracks objects and relays information to command vehicles, which assesses potential targets. At first, the target is identified and a command vehicle orders missile launch. The data is sent to the best placed launch vehicle, and it releases surface-to-air missiles. The engagement radar helps guide missiles towards the target.
How will S-400 missiles help India?
India signed the $5.5 billion deal with Russia in October 2018 to buy five units of the S-400 air defence missile systems. This decision was made despite warnings from the US that proceeding with the contract could lead to US sanctions under the CAATSA act. This acquisition is expected to enhance India's air defense capabilities significantly.
The advanced radar capabilities of S 400 will enable India to maintain surveillance deep into the China-Pakistan border region, enhancing situational awareness and response capabilities. Also, the system’s ability to operate in extreme temperatures and remain undetectable will solidify India’s position as a cornerstone of India’s defence strategy.
India’s defence ties with Russia
Russia has been the supplier for Su-30MKI and MiG-29 Fighters which have been the backbone of the Indian Air Force. The INS Vikramaditya Aircraft Carrier was also procured from Russia.
The T-90 Tanks that have been the key to the Indian Army's mechanised operations are also procured from Russia. The BrahMos Cruise Missile is also a successful joint Indo-Russian venture.
