Union home minister Amit Shah on Wednesday hit back at Congress MP KC Venugopal in Lok Sabha amid ruckus over the tabling of three bills proposing the removal of a Prime Minister, Union Minister or Chief Minister if they remain in jail for 30 consecutive days in connection with serious criminal charges.
The opposition leaders slammed the bill and raised slogans in the lower house, saying that the proposed legislation is against the federal system of the country
Venugopal claimed that Amit Shah was also arrested when he was the home minister of Gujarat. Shah swiftly set the record straight with a sharp rebuttal.
"Now listen to me, I want to clear the record. I resigned when false charges were levelled against me out of a moral responsibility. And I didn't take up any post until I was acquitted by the courts," Shah said.
He added that he resigned on moral grounds and wants to promote this moral code of conduct with the help of the proposed law.
Shah on Wednesday introduced the Constitution Amendment bill in Lok Sabha, which seeks to remove the Prime Minister or Chief Ministers who are facing allegations of corruption or serious offences and have been detained for 30 consecutive days.
He also introduced the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, to further amend the Constitution of India and the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, apart from the bill to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.
Notably, Shah had resigned as the home minister of Gujarat in July 2010 after being charged in connection with the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.
His resignation was submitted a day after he was formally charged.
Shah was later acquitted by a special CBI court in Mumbai in December 2014. The court cited lack of evidence as the reason for discharging him from the case.
