Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University in Bihar's Rajgir. The ceremony was attendance by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and ambassadors from around 17 nations.
Speaking at the inauguration event, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said the University marks the revival of a global bridge of Education and a commitment towards Global South.
Addressing guests during the inaugural ceremony, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar said that the BJP-led NDA acted swiftly and made all the arrangements for the completion of the historic centre of global learning.
The establishment of the new Nalanda University campus is a collaborative effort between India and East Asia Summit (EAS) countries. The original Nalanda University, founded approximately 1600 years ago, is recognized as one of the world's first residential universities. It thrived for centuries before being destroyed in the 12th century.
The establishment of the modern Nalanda University was initiated through the Nalanda University Act of 2010, following a decision made at the second East Asia Summit in the Philippines in 2007.
Nalanda University commenced operations in 2014 from a temporary site with an initial batch of 14 students. Construction on the new campus began in 2017. This institution has significant international involvement, with 17 countries, including Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and China, signing MoUs to support the university.
Nalanda University comprises six schools: the School of Buddhist Studies, Philosophy & Comparative Religions; the School of Historical Studies; the School of Ecology and Environmental Studies; and the School of Sustainable Development and Management. This institution aims to revive the legacy of the ancient Nalanda University and continue its tradition of academic excellence.
