Karnataka deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar on September 26 alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi rejected the state’s proposal for a GIFT City.
"During our previous visit to Delhi, CM Siddaramaiah and I appealed to the Prime Minister to grant a GIFT City for Karnataka. He rejected our request, saying there can be only one GIFT City in the country. We will have to elevate KWIN City to that level and showcase it," the minister said at the launch of Karnataka’s futuristic Knowledge, Wellbeing, and Innovation (KWIN) City.
Gujarat's GIFT (Gujarat International Finance Tec) City, launched with a $1 billion investment over 886 acres, includes a multi-service SEZ and a domestic tariff area (DTA) in a 1:3 ratio.
The KWIN City will not be just a concrete jungle but a sustainable city aimed at improving the quality of life for its residents, Shivakumar, who is also the Bengaluru development minister, said.
“Bengaluru has long been known as an intellectual city. There should be no doubt about Karnataka’s capabilities. As Bengaluru development minister, I am committed to its growth. Our priority is to provide essential amenities for people and industries,” he said.

The state government is focusing on future-oriented projects. The Cauvery 5th Stage, set to be completed soon, will meet the city's drinking water needs for the next 10 years," the minister said, as he talked about recent infrastructure development in the state.

Shivakumar said Bengaluru and Karnataka have enough talent pool and industrial strength. "Let’s build a strong future for the city and make it the prime driver of India’s growth. Karnataka is the top state for exports, including software. The KWIN City is our government’s way of showing support to the industry. Let's make this project a reality," he added.
