With the country under lockdown to contain the coronavirus outbreak, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is interacting with various gram panchayats through a video conference at 11 am on the occasion of National Panchayati Raj Day.
It was on April 24, 1993, that the Constitution (73rd Amendment) Act, 1992, came into force leading to the institutionalisation of Panchayati Raj through the Constitution.

PM Modi:If we stay in a protective environment then it is difficult to understand our capabilities. Coronavirus has shown that even people from rural areas, who may not be educated at well-known universities, have done a great job in combating the situation.
PM Modi: This app will even help in settling of land and property disputes. Panchayats and villagers can also avail loans from banks through the app. Currently, we will start with six states including UP, MP, Uttarakhand and Maharashtra and then gradually rolled out to other states as well.
PM Modi inaugurates e-GramSwaraj portal and a mobile app
PM Modi: We have launched an app called e-gram Swaraj that helps in digitisation of gram panchayats.This will be the single platform for all digital needs of gram panchayats.
PM Modi: Government has worked tirelessly to improve the operations at panchayats.Less than 100 panchayats even had broadband connections until a few years ago.Now more than 1.25 lakh panchayats have broadband.
PM Modi: It's true that Coronavirus epidemic has created new problems in our lives, some that never even imagined.But more importantly, we have learned a new lesson.Through the program today I want to give a message to every Indian citizen whether from urban or rural regions.The biggest lesson we have learnt from this crisis is that we should become self-dependent
PM Modi:Coronavirus has changed the way we work.We would meet in person at every event but now we have to resort to videoconferencing for such occasions. Lakhs of Sarpanchs and Panchayat members are connected through technology today. Today many Panchayats have got awarded for their performances.
