Kingsway or Rajpath, a symbol of slavery, has now been consigned to history, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on September 8 after inaugurating the newly-renamed Kartavya Path, the central avenue stretching from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate along with the Central Vista lawns.

PM Narendra Modi also unveiled the statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose beneath the canopy near India Gate. The 28-ft granite statute is crafted by sculptor Arun Yogiraj. The black granite statue has been carved from a monolithic block of granite weighing 280 metric tonnes. It is part of the Centre's Rs 13,450-crore Central Vista project.

Speaking after inaugurating Kartavya Path, Modi said the renaming has given the country a new energy and inspiration and that Kingsway or Rajpath, a symbol of slavery, has now been consigned to history.

"Symbol of colonialism 'Kingsway' will be a history and has been erased forever. A new era has begun in the form of Kartvyapath. I congratulate all the people of the country as we come out from another symbol of colonialism," the prime minister said."
