Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday that India is close to eliminating the threat of Naxalism, noting that 303 Naxalites have surrendered in just the last 75 hours. Speaking at the NDTV World Summit 2025, he said that Diwali celebrations this year will be especially meaningful in areas freed from Maoist violence.

Modi criticised the tendency to label the issue as “Naxalism,” saying it is in fact “Maoist terrorism” that has harmed the nation’s youth. He called it a grave injustice and said he could not watch silently while young lives were being destroyed. Revealing a personal side, he admitted he had carried this concern silently for years, saying: “For a long time, I kept this pain within me. Today, for the first time, I am expressing it.”

He said that government efforts, security operations, and development initiatives in affected regions have led to a rapid decline in the Maoist movement and the surrender of its cadres. He said that a Naxal-free India is now within reach.

He hit out at the Congress, saying during its rule at the Centre, an entire ecosystem of 'urban Naxals' had developed.
