The Central Railway (CR), in collaboration with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), is undertaking this project to replace the 112-year-old bridge.

The Sion overbridge, a vital transportation link of Mumbai, will remain closed for traffic for two years during which the century-old structure would be demolished and rebuilt. The closure, effective August 1 to July 31, 2026, has forced major re-routing of traffic in the country's financial hub.

The Central Railway (CR), in collaboration with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), is undertaking the project to replace the 112-year-old bridge. A structural audit by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, found the British-era structure unsafe and in the way of planned railway expansion between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Kurla.

The bridge is a crucial connector between Dharavi, Bandra, Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Marg, and the Eastern Express Highway (EEH).
