Officials said that at least two people have been killed while at least five injured in the incident, even as rescue operations continue. The injured have been admitted to the JJ Hospital and Habib Hospital, according to officials.
The collapsed building was located near Abdul Rehman Shah Dargah on Tandel street.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that around 15 families are "feared trapped in the collapse".
"The building is around 100 yrs old. The entire focus is on rescuing the people trapped. Investigation will be done," Fadnavis said, news agency ANI reported.

A visit by two relatives of a woman staying in the ill-fated building in Dongri ended on a tragic note as they got trapped under the debris after it collapsed and died, officials told PTI.

Local MLA Amin Patel will meet Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis in the afternoon to demand a hefty compensation and speedy rehabilitation for the victims.

An official from the BMC disaster management cell said three more bodies had been recovered early on Wednesday morning and had been sent to a nearby hospital, and awaiting doctors report about them.

In a statement, Mumbai fire brigade chief P S Rahangdale said two kids -- one aged between six-eight and the other aged about four -- were rescued from under the debris by the fire fighters.
"Both kids were sent to Sir JJ hospital in 108 Ambulance, but they were declared dead," Rahangdale said, adding one fireman was also injured in the line of duty. (PTI)
Sachidanand Gawde, the PRO of the NDRF battalion, said his team members had been told that there were few customers at an eatery situated in the ground floor and no one knew the exact numbers. "So our job is still left to rescue those men," he said.
"It (search and rescue operations) will go on till the last piece of rubble is not removed from the spot," he said. (PTI)

Collapsed building was unauthorised construction, says MHADA
The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) claimed July 16 that the four-storey building in south Mumbai's Dongri area which
collapsed earlier in the day was unauthorised.
At least seven persons have died in the collapse with rescue efforts still underway.
"MHADA's repair and reconstruction board clarified that its cessed property 25/C Kesarbai building is not the one that collapsed this morning," it said in a statement.
"In fact, an unauthorised construction erected behind that building is the one that crashed," said Vaishali Gadpale, chief PRO, MHADA.
The residents of the Kesarbai -- some officials had given its name as Kesarbaug -- building had vacated it in 2018 as it had become dilapidated, MHADA sources said. (PTI)

Confusion prevails over ownership of collapsed building
Confusion prevailed over the ownership of the 'Kausarbaug' building, believed to be 100 years old, which crumbled Tuesday morning in Dongri area of south Mumbai, killing 12 persons and trapping several others.
Part of the building, located in a congested lane in Tandel Street in the densely-populated locality, collapsed around 11.40 am, according to the disaster management cell of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Narrow lanes hamper rescue work at Mumbai building collapse site
The narrow lanes of Dongri area in south Mumbai where a building collapsed on Tuesday posed a major challenge for rescuers to approach the accident spot.
Some residents of Dongri, one of the most densely populated areas having several high-rise buildings, told PTI that had the JCB machines been able to reach the accident spot, more lives could have been saved.

News18 has reported that the claims to ownership of the Kesarbai building were conflicted. Vinod Ghosalkar, chief of the repair board of MHADA, said that the building did not belong to the housing body even as officials from MHADA reached the site to assess the situation. The BMC released a letter written in 2017 that clearly asked the residents to vacate and also issued a notice to MHADA.

Twelve persons were killed after a four-storey residential building collapsed in south Mumbai's congested Dongri area today, a Maharashtra minister said.
Twelve people were killed after the 'Kesarbaug' building, located in a bustling narrow lane in Tandel Street of Dongri area of south Mumbai, crashed, housing minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil said.

"If the developer has delayed re-development of the collapsed building, then he will face action. If some MHADA officials are responsible for the delay in its development, then they will also face strict action," MHADA Chairman Uday Samant to news agency PTI.
