Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India and China's "strategic autonomy" during his meeting with President Xi Jinping on August 31 and the bilateral relationship should not be seen through the lens of a third country, a statement by the ministry of external affairs said.

The statement signals New Delhi's dismissal of arguments that recent closeness with Beijing has taken place because of its concerns over the imposition of tariffs by the US.

"Prime Minister noted that India and China both pursue strategic autonomy, and their relations should not be seen through a third country lens. The two leaders deemed it necessary to expand common ground on bilateral, regional, and global issues and challenges, like terrorism and fair trade in multilateral platforms," the statement read.

Randhir Jaiswal, India's official spokesperson for the external affairs minister, said that stable and amicable ties between India and China are important for economic growth, reformed multilateralism and for a multipolar world.
