Senior officials from Meghalaya Police and the Border Security Force have categorically denied assertions from sections of Bangladesh media that primary suspects in the murder of Inquilab Moncho leader Sharif Osman Hadi have fled Bangladesh and have entered India through Meghalaya, according to a report by Hindustan Times.
The HT report, quoting senior police officials from the state and the Border Security Force said that the reports by the media in Bangladesh is 'false and fabricated narratives'. A top Dhaka Metropolitan Police officer also reportedly said that the two suspects in the murder of Inquilab Moncho leader Sharif Osman Hadi have fled Bangladesh and are believed to be currently in India.
“The suspects, Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Sheikh, crossed into the Indian state of Meghalaya with the help of local associates,” Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) S N Md Nazrul Islam told a press conference at the DMP Media Centre.
Despite rejecting the present allegations, Meghalaya Police said border vigilance has been stepped up as a precautionary measure, with intelligence sources activated and close coordination maintained with the BSF to prevent any possible misuse of border routes by criminal elements. “Enhanced security is a standard preventive step and should not be misconstrued as confirmation of false claims,” the same publication reported quoting a police headquarter official said.
The state police unequivocally dismissed these assertions outright, stating that no intelligence input, ground verification or operational evidence exists to support the alleged crossing or the roles attributed to Purti and Sami. “Neither Purti nor Sami has been identified, traced or arrested anywhere in Meghalaya. The narrative appears to have been constructed without verification or coordination with Indian authorities,” the PHQ official told HT.
Hadi, convenor of Inqilab Moncho, a prominent student activist and a parliamentary candidate for the upcoming February 12, 2026 national elections, died on December 18, 2025, in Singapore while receiving treatment for gunshot wounds sustained during an attack in Dhaka.
The funeral prayer service for Sharif Osman Hadi concluded in Bangladesh on Saturday. The prayer service drew a large crowd to pray for the Inqilab Moncho convenor. In accordance with the family's wishes, Hadi was buried beside the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. The student leader had announced plans to run as an independent for the Dhaka-8 seat in the upcoming election, was shot at close range on Dec 12 while travelling by rickshaw in the capital's Bijoynagar area. Police said two assailants arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
