Delhi’s air quality improved on Sunday, with the AQI dipping below 300 for the first time in 33 days, according to data released by the Central Pollution Control Board. In fact, the air quality index went down for all major metros.
Chennai’s AQI was 24, one of the lowest among Indian cities. Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Kolkata also had AQI levels below 100.
Bengaluru had an AQI of 59, while Kolkata and Hyderabad recorded AQI levels of 85 and 84.
New York’s air quality index was 58 on December 1, lower than the 222 of 257 cities that reported data in December. London’s AQI, at 50, was lower than that of 230 Indian cities.
Beijing’s AQI at 74 was lower than 197 Indian cities.
The number of cities recording AQI of over 300 also declined from 11 the previous week to two on December 1.
Tonk in Rajasthan and the industrial town of Byrnihat on the Meghalaya-Assam border were the most polluted places, with AQI readings of 319 and 315.
Two in five Indian cities faced good or satisfactory air quality, with AQI levels below 100, while 17 percent of Indian cities had AQI levels above 200.
