Amid fresh violations striking the state, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh issued a statement promising to undertake every necessary measure to safeguard people irrespective to their community.
"Today, I stand here with profound sadness and anger to condemn the horrific killings of three innocent children and three innocent women by Kuki terrorists after being taken hostage at Jiribam," Singh said in a video posted on his X handle.
Singh said such barbaric acts have no place in any civilized society. “Let me assure you that the hunt for these terrorists is currently underway and they will be brought to justice very soon. We will not rest until they are held accountable for their inhuman actions," said Singh.
The recent unrest began following the discovery of six decomposed bodies, reportedly linked to a shootout in Jiribam, where 10 Kuki militants were killed. Civil society groups, led by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), issued a strong ultimatum to both the state and central governments. The violence has effectively divided Manipur into two ethnic enclaves – the Meitei-dominated Imphal valley and Kuki-majority hills.
Singh also thanked the CRPF for their swift action in Jiribam. According to the CM, around 40 to 50 armed terrorists launched an assault on internally displaced persons residing in a relief camp at Borobekra and targeted a police station in Jiribam. "Their aim was to spread fear and destruction. However, thanks to timely and decisive response from CRPF personnel stationed there, the attack was repelled, and their swift action neutralised 10 of those terrorists on the spot, thereby saving hundreds of innocent lives living in relief camps,” said Singh.
Meanwhile, the CM also attacked Congress for the crisis in Manipur after P Chidambaram’s created an uproar. “Rushing 5,000 MORE central armed police jawans is not the answer to the Manipur crisis. It is more wisdom: acknowledging that Mr Biren Singh, the chief minister, is the cause of the crisis and removing him immediately,” said Chidambaram. The post was later deleted.
Singh reacted by saying Chidambaram is the “root cause” of the Manipur crisis and the Congress is the “creator of what we are seeing in the state today”.
“When he was the Union home minister during the then Congress government and O Ibobi was the chief minister here, they brought a Myanmarese foreigner Thanglianpau Guite, who himself admitted in one of the interviews that he contested an MP election in Myanmar. That person is the chairman of Zomi Revolutionary Army which is banned in Myanmar,” Singh said.
