22-year-old Mohammad Azim from Meerut's Brahmpuri was shocked when he arrived for his nikah ceremony last week and discovered that he was being tricked into marrying his 45-year-old mother-in-law Tahira instead of her daughter.
Azim told police that his elder brother, Nadeem, and sister-in-law, Shaida, had fixed his wedding with Shaida’s 21-year-old niece, Mantasha, who lives in Fazalpur, Kankerkhera. However, during the wedding proceedings, Azim became suspicious when the maulvi announced the bride’s name as Tahira.
"I couldn’t believe it when I saw her face. It wasn’t Mantasha — it was her mother," Azim said in his police statement.
When he refused to go ahead with the marriage or take the bride home, Azim alleged that his brother and sister-in-law threatened to falsely accuse him of rape. Fearing the consequences, he returned home alone and later filed a complaint at the SSP office in Meerut on Thursday.
SSP Meerut, Dr. Vipin Tada, confirmed that a complaint had been received. "We are conducting a detailed investigation and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings," he said. The matter remains under inquiry.
