A Mahindra Thar illegally drove onto railway tracks at Dimapur Railway Station in Nagaland late Tuesday, December 16, prompting police and railway authorities to intervene and register a case under the Railways Act.
Dimapur Police said the incident occurred around 11:35 pm when the SUV (registration NL-01/CA-8181) entered the track area from the station side and moved towards the platform before getting stuck on Line No. 1 near the old flyover on the Burma Camp side.
Video spread online; police say no damage reported
A video of the vehicle moving on the tracks and losing momentum circulated on social media, drawing public attention to the safety risk inside a station precinct.
Police said the vehicle was 'intercepted and removed' in coordination with railway officials, and that there was no reported harm to passengers or railway property during the response.
Case filed at RPF; probe includes possible intoxication angle
Authorities identified the driver as Thepfuneituo, 65, a resident of Signal Angami in Dimapur district, and said he was taken into custody.
A case was registered at the Railway Protection Force (RPF) station in Dimapur as Case No. 346/2025 dated December 17, 2025, under Sections 147 and 153 of the Railways Act, police said, adding that investigators are examining the circumstances, including whether alcohol or any other intoxicant was involved.
What the law covers
Section 147 of the Railways Act deals with trespass on railway property and provides for imprisonment up to six months, or a fine up to Rs 1,000, or both (with a minimum fine of Rs 500 in most cases).
Section 153 addresses endangering the safety of people travelling by railway through an unlawful act or wilful omission/neglect, and provides for imprisonment up to five years.
