Polling for the Lok Sabha election 2024 got underway on Friday morning, with around 16.86 crore voters being eligible to exercise their franchise in the first phase of polls for 102 constituencies.
In the first phase on April 19, polling is being held in seats in 21 states and union territories -- including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tripura, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar, Jammu and Kashmir, Lakshwadeep, Puducherry.
Across India, the 2024 general elections will be held in seven phases from April 19 to June 1 to elect 543 members of the 18th Lok Sabha. The counting of votes, meanwhile, will take place on June 4.
With the general elections here, here are some dos and don'ts for voters:
Dos:
1. The most important step is to confirm your name and polling station on the voter list. Voters can do so by visiting the Election Commission's website.
2. Prior to heading out to vote, it is key to check the voting hours at your respective polling booth.
3. Carry your voter ID card and other additional identification cards such as Aadhar, driving license among others.
4. Learn more about the candidates contesting from your constituency before you head out to vote.
5. After casting your vote, verify the VVPAT machine's output which is linked to the EVM. In case of any inconsistencies, report to the presiding officer. As a voter, one should not disclose the candidate/party in whose favour the vote has been cast.
Don'ts:
1. Do not use your mobile phone in the polling station.
2. Don't use camera or take selfies while casting your vote as this may lead to consequences.
3. Impersonating another voter is a serious offence so one should avoid doing that.
4. Do not bring anything which points to a political party's or candidate's symbol and don't try to find out who a person has voted for or plans to vote.
5. Don't forget to bring EPIC-voter ID card and don't try to press more than one button while voting.
