Telangana CM unveils logo for 10th state formation day celebrations
As the Telangana government is set to organise the state's 10th formation day celebrations on a grand scale spanning 21 days from June 2, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday unveiled the official logo for the events reflecting the state's existence and the progress achieved in the last decade. Lift irrigation projects like the one in Kaleswaram, electricity, agriculture, 'Mission Bhagiratha' (scheme which provides purified potable drinking water through taps to every household), Yadadri temple (abode of Lord Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy), Metro rail, T-Hub (Telangana's innovation ecosystem), the new Secretariat named after B R Ambedkar and a 125-feet tall statue of the architect of India's Constitution are incorporated in the official logo prepared by the state government as per the directions of the Chief Minister, an official release said here.
Crew of INSV Tarini to be welcomed by Navy in Goa for historic circumnavigation
A grand flag in ceremony to welcome the trans-ocean inter-continental voyage by the crew of INSV Tarini will be held on Tuesday at the Indian Naval Watermanship Training Centre (INWTC) in Goa. A Navy spokesman said the six-member crew, including two women officers, will be honoured in a ceremony that will be graced by Union Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar and ex-captain of the Indian women's hockey team Rani Rampal.
G20 event in Kashmir kicks off amidst tight security; Delegates given rousing welcome
Delegates of all G20 countries, barring China, arrived in Srinagar on Monday for the third working group meeting on tourism - a much-anticipated event for which authorities have made extensive security arrangements and spruced up the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. WhatsApp allows users to edit messages
WhatsApp has granted users one of its most awaited features - the ability to edit messages. "For the moments when you make a mistake or simply change your mind, you can now edit your sent messages on WhatsApp," the Meta Platforms Inc-owned messaging app said in a blog post on Monday. With the feature rolling out globally in the coming weeks, senders will be able to modify their messages within 15 minutes of hitting send.
Cough syrup exporters need to undertake product testing at govt labs from June 1
Cough syrup exporters will have to undertake testing of their products at specified government laboratories from June 1 before getting permission for the outbound shipments. The direction has come after quality concerns were raised globally for cough syrups exported by Indian firms. "The export of cough syrup shall be permitted to be exported subject to export samples being tested and production of certificate of analysis issued by any of the laboratories", with effect from June 1, 2023, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification on Monday.

Delhi High court seeks BBC response in Modi documentary defamation case
The Delhi High Court on Monday issued a notice to British broadcaster BBC seeking its response in a defamation case over a documentary on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that questioned his leadership during the 2002 Gujarat riots. The documentary, "India: the Modi question", focused on Modi's leadership as chief minister of the western state during riots in 2002 in which at least 1,000 people were killed, most of them Muslims. Activists put the toll at more than twice that.

The Supreme Court Monday said it will hear on May 26 the petition of former Delhi minister Satyendar Jain seeking bail in a money laundering case being probed by the Enforcement Directorate. A bench of Justices Aniruddha Bose and Sanjay Karol agreed to list the matter for hearing on May 26, after senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for Jain, sought urgent listing of the plea on health grounds.

Assets worth more than Rs 121 crore of Anwar Dhebar, the elder brother of Raipur Mayor Anwar Dhebar, IAS officer Anil Tuteja, former MD of Chhattisgarh State Marketing Corporation Ltd. Arun Pati Tripathi and others have been attached in the alleged liquor scam-linked money laundering case, the ED said Monday. The properties, provisionally attached under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), include 14 properties of Tuteja worth Rs. 8.83 crore, 69 properties of Anwar Dhebar worth Rs 98.78 crore and one asset of Tripathi worth Rs 1.35 crore, the federal agency said in a statement.

Meta hit with record $1.3 billion fine over data transfers
Meta was hit with a record 1.2 billion euro ($1.3 billion) fine by its lead European Union privacy regulator over its handling of user information and given five months to stop transferring users' data to the United States. The fine, imposed by Ireland's Data Protection Commissioner (DPC), came after Meta continued to transfer data beyond a 2020 EU court ruling that invalidated an EU-U.S. data transfer pact. It tops the previous record EU privacy fine of 746 million euros handed by Luxembourg to Amazon.com Inc in 2021.

Indian rupee hits 13-week low tracking dollar strength
The Indian rupee hit a 13-week low on Monday, weighed down by broad strength in the dollar, while markets looked for developments on the U.S. debt ceiling and the trajectory of rate hikes in the world's largest economy. The rupee ended down 0.2% at 82.8275 to the U.S. dollar, compared to its close of 82.66 in the previous session. It had touched its lowest since Feb. 27 at 82.85, early in the session. The spike in the dollar index has changed the trading range for the rupee to 82.50-83 from its long-time range of 81.60-81.90, said Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury at Finrex Treasury Advisors.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that Sri Lanka's debt restructuring programme will be completed by September this year and its bankrupt economy will be brought to a stable level, a media report said on Monday.
Debt-ridden Sri Lanka is still struggling to normalise its crisis-hit economy after it declared its first-ever debt default in April last year.
Satyendar Jain's health update
Jailed AAP leader and former Delhi minister Satyendar Jain was on Monday examined by doctors at the Safdarjung Hospital here for a spine problem, an official told PTI.
Lodged at Delhi's Tihar Jail since his arrest in connection with a money laundering case last year, Jain was taken to the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital on Saturday but as he wanted a second opinion, he was taken to the Safdarjung Hospital, a senior jail official said.
Jain was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on May 31, 2022, in connection with a money laundering case.

US President Biden honours Indian-origin NYPD officer with Medal of Valour
A 27-year-old Indian-origin New York Police Department (NYPD) officer and nine others were honoured by US President Joe Biden with the Medal of Valour, the country's highest award for public safety officers.
Sumit Sulan was honoured at a White House ceremony on Wednesday for shooting a convicted felon who killed two of his colleagues when the trio were investigating a domestic-violence call in New York City in January.

NCLAT upholds Go First's insolvency, lessors asked to move to NCLT
The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) on May 22 upheld Go First's insolvency in a plea by aircraft lessors.
The lessors have been asked to move to NCLT to move the appropriate application.
The aircraft lessors to Go First, such as SMBC aviation capital, SFV aircraft holdings and GY Aviation Lease, challenged the order of National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) admitting the cash-strapped airline's plea for insolvency. The lessors argued at the NCLAT that Go First is using the insolvency proceedings to hold on to aircraft that it does not own.

Speaking at the event, Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape said that they are victims of global powerplay. He said that Pacific Islands nations will rally behind Indian leadership at global forums.
Mr Marape also urged Mr Modi to be an active voice for the small island nations at global forums such as G20 and G7 attributing him as the leader of Global South.
Around leaders of 14 countries participated in the summit held at APEC House located on the shores of Ela Beach in Port Moresby. APEC House is designed to host world leaders for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings. FIPIC was launched during Modi's visit to Fiji in 2014.

Another big blow for Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka's apparel exports hit new lows as April performance fell sharply by 24 percent as against last year. The exports for the month were valued at $318 million. Cumulatively, the performance in the first four months declined Year on year by 17 percent to $1.5 billion.
Apparel exports to the US, EU and UK markets decreased by 25.5 to 27.5 percent.
Apart from higher inventories in markets, industry analysts said Sri Lanka has also become expensive for apparel sourcing as compared to other countries.

Black money finds no mention in RBI Governor Das' address on Rs 2,000 notes
The issue of black money found no mention in Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das' briefing on the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes.
In an impromptu address to the media on May 22, Das said that the May 19 decision to withdraw the notes was a result of the RBI's currency management given that the high-denomination note had served its purpose.
In his briefing, Das did not offer black money reduction as an objective of the decision and instead focussed on the falling use of the note and the end of its normal life.

Adani Group shares surged on Monday, extending gains spurred by an Indian court panel’s report that found no conclusive evidence of stock-price manipulation as alleged by US short seller Hindenburg Research.
The 10 Adani stocks have added about $10 billion to their market value in today’s session so far, poised to be the biggest increase since Hindenburg’s scathing report in January. Flagship Adani Enterprises Ltd. surged more than 17%, adding to its 3.5% gain on Friday.
