The ancient city of Kashi has emerged as a major global tourism destination, with record numbers of domestic and international visitors, reflecting a sustained revival driven by infrastructure upgrades, improved connectivity and focused governance over the past decade.
Under the present political dispensation, Varanasi has witnessed a renewed energy that blends its ancient spiritual identity with modern facilities. Brand Banaras has increasingly become a centre of attraction for tourists from across India and abroad.
Official data shows that from 2014 to September 2025, more than 454.48 million Indian and foreign tourists visited Kashi. In 2025 alone, the city received 146.97 million visitors, the highest ever recorded in a single year. The total tourist footfall has risen sharply from 5.48 million in 2014, marking a historic increase of over 146.42 million visitors in 2025 compared to the base year.
According to figures compiled by the Tourism Department, between 2014 and 2025, Varanasi received over 451.60 million domestic tourists and around 2.87 million foreign tourists. The surge is being seen as a major boost to the city’s tourism-driven economy.
“Prime Minister Modi became the Member of Parliament from Varanasi in 2014, while Yogi Adityanath assumed office as chief minister in 2017. Since then, the double-engine government has focused on the comprehensive development of Varanasi along with other key tourist destinations in the state,” Tourism Minister Jaiveer Singh said.
Officials attribute the rising tourist inflow to stronger law and order, better road, rail and air connectivity, major improvements in basic infrastructure and the creation of world-class facilities. The inauguration of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor has significantly expanded amenities for devotees and tourists visiting the iconic temple.
Rahul Mehta, President of the Tourism Welfare Association, Uttar Pradesh, said the growing tourist inflow has benefited every sector linked to tourism. He said it has strengthened the local economy and generated new employment opportunities, adding that Varanasi is steadily emerging as a global tourism hub.
Additional initiatives such as the beautification of Ganga ghats, improved sanitation, redevelopment of Sarnath, the launch of river cruises on the Ganges and the steady expansion of modern civic amenities have further enhanced the city’s appeal.
“A large number of visitors now prefer river rides to watch the Ganga Aarti and enjoy the view of the ghats. This was unthinkable a decade ago,” said Vikas Malviya, Director of Alaknanda Cruise Line.
Tourism took a hit in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, from 2022 onwards, Varanasi witnessed an unprecedented surge in visitor numbers. Each year from 2022 to 2025 recorded a fresh high, giving renewed momentum to the tourism industry.
Khalid Ansari, Managing Director of Coral Hotels and Resorts, said urban development accelerates both industrial growth and tourism. He said in a historic city like Varanasi, development has multiplied employment opportunities in tourism, hospitality and real estate, while also enhancing the city’s international identity.
“This boom has generated a plethora of job opportunities in the hospitality, transportation, and retail sectors of the economy. These changes and opportunities have contributed to the city’s economic growth.,” he said.
Moreover, initiatives like Swadesh Darshan and PRASHAD by the Ministry of Tourism have further strengthened tourism infrastructure, ensuring that growth is both sustainable and inclusive.
Manoj Mishra, office-bearer of the Kashi Vyapar Sangh, said the surge in tourist inflow has led to the circulation of money across all sectors of the city’s economy. “From small shopkeepers, boatmen and street vendors to hotels, transport operators and craftsmen, everyone is benefiting from the steady flow of tourists. The increased footfall has boosted daily earnings, expanded businesses and created jobs, ensuring that economic gains reach every layer of society in Kashi,” he said.
