India has been chosen to host the 5th Coast Guard Global Summit (CGGS) in 2027, a decision made unanimously by participants at the 4th CGGS in Rome, Italy.
The latest development highlights India’s expanding role in international maritime cooperation.
The announcement came during the summit held on September 11-12, attended by delegates from 115 countries and international organisations. The Indian delegation was led by Director General of the Indian Coast Guard, Paramesh Sivamani, AVSM, PTM, TM.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, DG Sivamani highlighted the summit’s importance in fostering global cooperation to address maritime challenges. He thanked the Italian Coast Guard for hosting the event and acknowledged the Japan Coast Guard for its role as CGGS Secretariat.
India will host the 5th CGGS in Chennai in 2027, coinciding with the Golden Jubilee of the Indian Coast Guard. The three-day event will include an International Coast Guard Fleet Review and a World Coast Guard Seminar, providing a platform to discuss emerging maritime threats and promote collaboration.
DG Sivamani stressed that maritime challenges cannot be addressed by a single nation and that the summit will serve as a forum to build trust, enhance interoperability, and strengthen global cooperation.
During the Rome summit, DG Sivamani also met with the Commandant of the Italian Coast Guard to discuss expanded cooperation under the India-Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029. Areas of focus include maritime search and rescue, marine pollution response, transnational crime prevention, information sharing, capacity building, and training support.
