Himachal rains: Another landslide strikes Shimla, death toll nears 55

According to Shimla Deputy Commissioner Aditya Negi, the uprooting of a large tree caused a landslip leading to the collapse of a cluster of houses with deafening noise.

The rescue operations were suspended on Monday night following heavy rainfall.
So far, the state has suffered losses to the tune of Rs 7,171 crore since the onset of monsoon on June 24 till August 14, according to the state emergency operation centre.

Two more persons died in Himachal after at least eight houses, including six makeshift ones, were razed to the ground and a slaughterhouse was buried under debris in a landslide in the Krishnanagar locality of Shimla late evening on August 15.

The bodies of two persons trapped under the rubble of the houses have been recovered, Shimla SP Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi said.
