Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday described the hoisting of the saffron Dharm Dhwaj atop the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya as a “historic” moment, marking what he called the rebirth of an ancient civilisation and the beginning of a new chapter in India’s cultural pride.
Sharing a video on X, PM Modi wrote in Hindi that being part of the flag-hoisting ceremony at the “sacred abode of Ayodhya” was an “extremely moving experience.”
He added, “The glorious flag of the Ram Temple symbolizes the establishment of a renaissance for developed India… may it guide the path to prosperity through good governance.”
Addressing the gathering at the ‘Dhwajarohan’ ceremony, the Prime Minister said, “Ram is not a person, He is a value. If we want to make India developed by 2047, we have to awaken Ram within ourselves.” He said that “Lord Ram connects through emotion” and that devotion and cooperation form the foundation of Indian society.
PM Modi noted that in the past 11 years, the government’s development efforts had centred on “every section of society -- women, Dalits, backward classes, tribals, farmers, workers, and youth.”
He urged citizens to act with foresight: “Humein aane wale 1000 varshon ke liye Bharat ki neev mazboot karni hai… jab hum nahin rahenge yeh desh tab bhi rahega.”
The Prime Minister underlined that India must draw strength from its heritage while freeing itself from “the slave mentality” to reach the goal of a developed nation by 2047.
Referring to the introduction of English education by Thomas Macaulay in 1835, he called it the start of efforts “to uproot India from its roots,” and said the country should aim to eliminate this “slave mentality” by 2035, when the event completes 200 years.
Explaining the symbolism of the Dharma Dhwaja, Modi said it represents the rejuvenation of Indian civilisation.
“This Dharm Dhwaj is not just a flag. It is the flag of the rejuvenation of Indian civilisation,” he said.
The saffron flag, adorned with sacred emblems -- Om, the Sun, and the Kovidar tree -- embodies the ideals of Ram Rajya. The 10x20-foot flag now flies atop the 191-foot-high shikhar of the Grand Ram Temple.
“The Kovidar tree reminds us that when we forget our identity, we lose ourselves,” he said, adding that its presence on the flag signifies “the rejuvenation of our identity.”
PM Modi also reflected on the spiritual significance of the day: “Today, the entire India and the world is Ram-may… the wounds of centuries are being healed.”
He said that the hoisting of the Dharm Dhwaj marks “the completion of that sacrifice whose fire remained lit for 500 years,” symbolising the fulfilment of a civilisational resolve and the dawn of a “confident, future-ready India.”
