Employees of Cambata Aviation have begun an agitation after not being paid their salaries for the past 17 months. Led by social activist Anjali Damania the workers have commenced an agitation on Tuesday at the Azad Maidan, Mumbai.
Reports in Hindustan Times state that the company which was a leading ground handling agency at the airports of Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Goa and New Delhi has failed to make payments to its workers for nearly one and a half years.
The owners of the company left after its closure in last August leaving close to 2700 employees in the dark. All attempts to contact the company’s management have also turned futile.
“The workers are on the streets and there is no response either from the company or the government. Their hard-earned money is not being paid to them,” said Damania who is leading the protest.
Alleging that it was the mismanagement of funds that has led to the current crisis in the company she asked the state government to direct the Mumbai International Airport Limited to take up the responsibility of the crisis and solve it.
Besides current employees, over 500 retired workers are yet to get their retirement benefits. “My daughter who was diagnosed with tumour is no more. We faced a harrowing time and spent a lot of money for her treatment,”said one person.
The company has refuted allegations of mismanagement and claimed massive investments were done.
