All candidates who contested the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections have been directed by the varsity to sign an affidavit pledging to refrain from bursting firecrackers or issuing, and/ or using dhols and loudspeakers -- both in open and closed premises – after poll results are declared.
Roadshows and rallies to celebrate 2024 DUSU election victory have been banned as well.
Failure to adhere to any of the conditions might lead to the cancellation of a candidate’s victory or them being removed from their elected post, the Delhi University said.
DUSU Elections
Elections to the top four DUSU posts were held on September 27. However, result declaration was postponed after the Delhi High Court put a stay on the same until the defacement caused during the campaign was cleaned up.
Although the university submitted a status report to the court, delays in the cleanup process forced further postponements, moving the results first to November 21 and now to November 25.
The DUSU elections are considered crucial as they are considered an indicator of the political affiliations of the youth of the National Capital.
The RSS-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Congress students wing National Students Union of India (NSUI) are the main unions in the fray.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which runs the Delhi government, has not been able to emerge as a strong contender in the Delhi University elections.
Vote Counting
The counting of votes for the Delhi University Students’ Union elections were held across colleges in Delhi on November 24. Results will be declared tomorrow, i.e., November 25.
