Lawyers at the Allahabad High Court have announced an indefinite strike from March 25 in protest of the Supreme Court Collegium's decision to transfer Justice Yashwant Varma, the Delhi High Court judge from whose bungalow a large sum of burnt cash was allegedly found during Holi.
"Lawyers of the High Court Bar Association, Allahabad will go on an indefinite strike from Tuesday following Justice Yashwant Varma's transfer to Allahabad High Court," bar body president Anil Tiwari told PTI.
"We are sending a request to the Bar Associations in Lucknow in this regard', he added.
The decision to strike was made following the Supreme Court Collegium's recommendation on Monday to transfer him to the Allahabad High Court.
On Saturday, the Supreme Court set up a three-member committee to investigate the allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma and instructed Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya to temporarily suspend assigning him judicial duties.
In its resolution, the Supreme Court Collegium stated, "In meetings held on 20th and 24th March 2025, the Collegium recommended the repatriation of Justice Yashwant Varma, judge of the Delhi High Court, to the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad."
The Allahabad High Court Bar Association had earlier opposed to his transfer, arguing that they should not be seen as a "trash bin."
