The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday issued an advisory for Indians in light of the ongoing situation in Nepal, urging them to postpone their travel plans to the neighbouring country “until the situation has stabilised.”
In its advisory, the ministry said, “In view of the developing situation in Nepal, Indian citizens are advised to defer travel there until the situation has stabilised.”
“Indian citizens presently in Nepal are advised to shelter in their current places of residence, avoid going out onto the streets and exercise all due caution. They are also advised to follow local safety advisories from Nepal authorities as well as the Embassy of India in Kathmandu,” it further added.
It also highlighted the helpline numbers for the assistance of Indians living there. “In case of any assistance required, please call the Embassy of India, Kathmandu, on the following helpline numbers: +977-980 860 2881 (WhatsApp call also) and +977-981 032 6134 (WhatsApp call also).”
This comes amid violent protests in Nepal, that have led to 21 deaths and left hundreds injured.
The protests began on Monday with demands that the government lifted a ban on social media and tackled corruption. However, it reignited on Tuesday despite the apps going back online.
Protesters on Tuesday attacked and set fire to KP Sharma Oli's house, the 73-year-old Prime Minister and leader of the Communist Party, according to Nepali media.
Amid violent protests, the Nepali Prime Minister stepped down from his position. "I have resigned from the post of prime minister with effect from today... in order to take further steps towards a political solution and resolution of the problems," Oli said Tuesday.
Earlier today, the external affairs ministry said it was "closely monitoring the developments in Nepal since yesterday" and is "deeply saddened by the loss of many young lives."
"Our thoughts and prayers are with families of deceased. We also wish speedy recovery for those who were injured. As a close friend and neighbour, we hope that all concerned will excercise restraint and address any issues through peaceful means and dialogue," the statement read.
"We have also taken note that authorities have imposed curfew in Kathmandu and several other cities of Nepal. Indian nationals in Nepal are advised to exercise caution and adhere to the steps and guidelines issued by the Nepali authorities," the MEA said.
