The official Income Tax Return (ITR) e-filing portal has become the target of social media criticism after users highlighted its inappropriate artwork for the “Session Expired” page.
In the image, a figure lies flat beside a melted candle, which many interpreted as resembling a lifeless body, complete with a garland. The graphic is meant to indicate session timeout due to inactivity, but it sparked outrage. One user commented, “WTF is this art used by Income Tax? Dead body for session expired? This is so distasteful.”
Another user posted a dancing image, with the caption “Ghoomar Ghoomar,” referring to the traditional Rajasthani dance. "ITR filing portal by Infosys be like: Forget your returns, enjoy our free 'Ghoomar dance' show instead. Every time 'Session Expired' pops up, it feels like I'm filing patience returns, not income tax," the user posted on X.
This is not the first time the portal has drawn criticism. Since its launch, the site has faced technical glitches, login issues, and slow performance, particularly during peak filing seasons. Now, even its interface design has come under fire.
The income tax department extended the ITR filing deadline by a day to September 16, just minutes before the original deadline ended.
In a post on X just before midnight, the I-T department announced that it will extend the due date by a day.
“The Central Board of Direct Taxes has decided to further extend the due date for filing these ITRs for AY 2025-26 from 15th September, 2025 to 16th September, 2025,” it said.
It added that the portal will remain inaccessible until 2.30am on September 16 to effect the latest changes in utilities. “To enable changes in the utilities, the e- filing portal will remain in maintenance mode from 12:00 AM to 02:30AM on 16th September 2025,” it said.
Taxpayers who fail to file returns by the due date can file belated return by December 31, but will have to shell out late-filing fees of Rs 1,000-Rs 5,000, besides forfeiting other benefits.
