CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury’s son Ashish Yechury passed away on April 22 due to COVID-19 disease.
“It is with great sadness that I have to inform that I lost my elder son, Ashish Yechury to COVID-19 this morning,” Yechury tweeted on the day.
He thanked all the doctors and nurses who treated his son as well as frontline health workers, sanitation workers and others who stood by them in the tough time.
Ashish, who would have turned 35 on June 9, was recovering well at Gurgaon's Medanta Hospital, people close to the family added, describing his sudden death at 5.30 am after a two-week battle with the disease as a shock. He was a senior copy editor, working with a leading newspaper in New Delhi.
National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah condoled the demise of Yechury's son. "My heart goes out to @SitaramYechury and his family. No words are enough at a time like this but sadly words of sympathy and condolence are all we have to offer. May his son Ashish's soul rest in peace and may the family find strength at this difficult time," he said in a tweet.
President Ram Nath Kovind said he was grieved beyond words to learn about the death of Yechury's son.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala also condoled the death Ashish Yechury.
"Dear Com. @SitaramYechury, our deepest condolences on the loss of Ashish. Our thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time," Vijayan tweeted.
"Dear @SitaramYechury Deepest condolences on your loss. My family also joins me in sharing your pain and grief. Our thoughts are with you and your family," Chennithala tweeted.
Political leaders in Tamil Nadu including DMK president MK Stalin also offered condolences. "I offer my heartfelt condolences to Comrade SitaramYechury, his family and friends at this difficult time," he said in a tweet.
MDMK leader Vaiko, also Rajya Sabha member, said "no words can take away the pain of losing a beloved family member."
"With great sadness, I learnt the demise of your elder son Ashish Yechuri succumbing to COVID-19. No words can take away the pain of losing a beloved family member," he said in his condolence message to the Left veteran.
"May the Mother Nature give you and your family the courage and strength to overcome this tragic loss," Vaiko added.
