A little over two months after students across Pakistan returned to classes, the authorities on Monday decided to close all educational institutions again from November 26 to January 10 to contain the COVID-19 pandemic that has claimed nearly 7,700 lives and infected over 3.7 lakh people in the country.The decision was taken at a meeting of Pakistan''s education ministers. Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood chaired the meeting of education ministers of all four provinces as well as representatives of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Gilgit-Baltistan."It has been decided that all universities, colleges and schools will be switched to online teaching mode and all educational institutions will be closed from November 26 to December 24," Mahmood said."Winter vacations will be observed from December 25 to January 10. The institutions will reopen on January 11. But we will hold a review meeting to evaluate the situation in the first week of January," he said.Educational institutions in the country reopened on September 15, over six months after they were closed in view of the outbreak of the pandemic. The minister told reporters here that the pollution due to stubble-burning created a big problem in Delhi. It caused problems in breathing and those who had COVID-19 inhaled the smoke, which aggravated the seriousness, he said.

AstraZeneca says late-stage trials of its COVID-19 vaccine were highly effective in preventing disease. A vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford prevented 70 percent of people from developing the coronavirus in late-stage trials, the team reported today. Key researcher Dr Andrew Pollard said scientists were pleased with the results. He said researchers found that if people were given a half dose followed by a full dose, rather than two full doses, protection rose to about 90 percent. These findings show that we have an effective vaccine that will save many lives," he said. Two other drugmakers, Pfizer and Moderna, last week reported preliminary results from late-stage trials showing that their COVID-19 vaccines were almost 95% effective. (AP)

The Supreme Court today asked the Centre and all states to file within two days status reports detailing steps taken to deal with the current COVID-19 situation, noting that the pandemic has worsened in places like Delhi and Gujarat. The court said the situation is going out of control in Gujarat. Things have worsened in Delhi especially in November. You file a status report on what steps have been taken, a bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan told Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain, who was appearing for Delhi government. The bench, also comprising Justices R S Reddy and M R Shah, said that all efforts shall be made by the Centre and the states to mitigate the situation and to deal with the rising number of COVID-19 cases. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine may provide protection against COVID-19, according to a study that could also explain why children have a much lower case rate and death rate of the disease than adults. The MMR vaccine has been theorised to provide protection against COVID-19, and now the study, published in the journal mBio, provides further proof of this by showing that mumps IgG titers, or levels of IgG antibody, are inversely correlated with severity in recovered COVID-19 patients previously vaccinated with the MMR II vaccine. MMR II contains the Edmonston strain of measles, the Jeryl Lynn (B-level) strain of mumps, and the Wistar RA 27/3 strain of rubella, the researchers said. (PTI)

Uttarakhand Governor Baby Rani Maurya has tested positive for COVID-19. In a tweet last evening, Maurya said, "My corona report has come out positive. I am asymptomatic and have no problems. I have isolated myself under the supervision of doctors. I request everyone who came in contact with me over the last few days to get themselves tested." A press release from the Raj Bhawan said the Uttarakhand governor had returned here from Agra on Friday after a week-long vacation. As Saturday and Sunday were holidays and the governor's residential quarters and the Raj Bhawan secretariat are quite distant from each other, she did not come in contact with any official or employee, it said. South Korea reported another daily rise of more than 200 new coronavirus cases today, a day after it tightened social distancing rules as it battles a third wave of infection. The daily tally of 255 new cases fell from 330 reported yesterday after hovering above 300 for five straight days, a level not seen since August, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA). Officials have said the numbers tend to drop during the weekends due to less testing.

Union health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan said a locally-developed COVID-19 vaccine candidate could complete its final trials in a month or two, raising hopes for a rapid roll-out in a country with the world’s second-highest number of infections. The Delhi Police distributed face masks across various shelter homes and residential areas in the city. According to the police, 1,501 challans were issued to people for not wearing a face mask while 33 people were fined for not adhering to social distancing norms. A total of 5,43,953 challans have been issued in the national capital since June 15, they said. (PTI)
