As many as 594 doctors have died due to COVID-19 in the ongoing second wave with Delhi recording the maximum 107 fatalities, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has said.According to the IMA, 748 doctors died of the infection across the country in the first wave of the pandemic.Delhi recorded 107 deaths in the second wave, followed by Bihar 96, Uttar Pradesh 67, Rajasthan 43, Jhakhand 39 and Andhra Pradesh and Telangana 32 each, according to data compiled at the IMA's COVID-19 registry."Last year 748 doctors across India succumbed to COVID-19, while in the current wave we have lost 594 doctors in a short period," IMA president J A Jayalal said.

CSIR- Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) here on Wednesday said it has tied up with Meril Life Sciences for commercially scaling up its dry swab-based tests for detecting COVID-19. The premier research institute, in a press release, said the dry swab-based direct RT-PCR for COVID-19 testing has been developed by the CCMB and has been approved by ICMR based on their independent validation. This method is a simple variation of the existing gold standard RT-PCR method and can easily scale up the testing by 2 to 3-fold with no new investment of resources. Rakesh Mishra, Advisor, CSIR-CCMB, said RNA extraction, even with automation, usually takes four hours for roughly 500 samples.

Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) on June 1 updated its guidance to recommend mixing and matching second doses of the AstraZeneca, Moderna and Pfizer vaccines “in certain situations”, sources told CBC News. The change is based on early research from the UK and Spain, which showed that mixing the vaccines was “safe and effective” at preventing COVID-19 and recommended AstraZeneca as the first jab and either Moderna or Pfizer as the second. NACI has thus recommended that Canadians who took Moderna or Pfizer as their first shot, can take either of the mRNA vaccines as second shot, based on their availability.

Xray Setu is quick and easy to use and can facilitate detection in rural areas. The specially designed platform also helps in early intervention through rapid screening of COVID-19 with chest X-ray interpretation for doctors who have access to X-ray machines, it said. "ARTPARK (AI & Robotics Technology Park), a not-for-profit foundation established by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, with support from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), in collaboration with Bengaluru-based HealthTech startup Niramai and the IISc, has developed XraySetu specifically designed to identify Covid positive patients even from low-resolution chest X-Ray images sent over Whatsapp," the DST said. The COVID-19 death toll in Ladakh has climbed to 190 following a fatality in Kargil, while 88 fresh cases pushed the overall tally to 18,750 in the union territory, officials said today. The number of active cases in Ladakh stand at 1,581 which includes 1,386 cases in Leh district and 213 cases in Kargil district, they said. While 136 people died because of coronavirus in Leh, 54 died in Kargil. Of the new cases reported in the past 24 hours, the officials said 71 were detected in Leh and 17 in Kargil. They said a total of 120 patients were also discharged after successful treatment, taking the number of those cured to 16,979, which account for over 90 percent of the total cases. The Maharashtra government yesterday announced rationalisation of the rates of COVID-19 treatment at private hospitals, which is expected to giverelief to patients in rural areas. The earlier rates, prescribed by the government duringthe first wave of the pandemic, were based on the rates prevalent in Mumbai, said health minister Rajesh Tope.
"We have now decided to rationalise them further, so the charges will be reduced in tehsil- and district-level hospitals," he said.
