The novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, pandemic has spread across at least 170 countries. There are at least 173 active reported cases of novel coronavirus in India right now. The Union Health Ministry has said that 15 people have recovered so far, but four have died. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his address to the nation today, appealed citizens to show 'resolve and patience' to tide over the crisis.
Globally, there have been over 2.2 lakh confirmed cases of COVID-19. At least 8,900 people have died so far — many in China. However, infections have steadily risen in Italy, France, Iran, South Korea, Spain and the United States. The outbreak is having a major impact on global economy and the stock market. Within two days, brokerage Bank of America Securities has sharply cut the June quarter growth forecast by 90 bps to a low of 3.1 percent and the full-year India GDP target by 100 bps to 4.1 percent for FY2021, citing an almost certain global recession due to the pandemic.
Yesterday, Bank of America Securities India had sharply projected down its June quarter growth by 80 bps to 4 percent and the March quarter of the current fiscal by 30 bps to 4 percent, citing the coronavirus-driven shutdowns.
It had also pegged full-year FY2021 growth at 5.1 percent citing a likely fall in global growth to a low 2.2 percent.
16 Indians who tested positive for COVID-19 on ship off Japan returned home after treatment: MEA
Sixteen Indian nationals, who were among those who tested positive for coronavirus on board a cruise ship docked off Japan, were discharged after receiving treatment at onshore medical facilities in that country and subsequently returned to India, the ministry of External Affairs informed the Rajya Sabha today.
