Jammu-based CSIR-IIIM has devised a novel, simpler and cost-effective diagnostic kit for rapid testing of large numbers of suspected Coronavirus-infected people and has approached ICMR for its evaluation and approval, Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM)director said today.
The new Reverse Transcriptase-Loop Mediated Isothermal Amplification (RT-LAMP) assay-based COVID-19 diagnostic kit has been developed as an alternative to the standard quantitative PCR (qPCR) after reverse transcription (RT) method, which is very sensitive but requires expensive instrumentation, IIIM Director, Dr D Srinivasa Reddy.
He said the novel kit has been submitted to ICMR and is presently under evaluation with it.

There has been a rise of 80 percent in the number of home isolation cases of COVID-19 in the national capital in the last 16 days, and parallely the containment zones count too has spiraled up to 976 over the same period, according to official data.
Amid steady rise in fresh and active coronavirus cases in the last several days, the number of people in home isolation reached the five-figure mark again after over a month's time.
The number of home isolation cases of COVID-19 on September 5 stood at 10,514. The corresponding figure a day before was 9,822, according to the Delhi health department.
On August 21, the home isolation cases count was 5,818, so from that date, the rise is of 80 percent in 16 day.

Coronavirus in West Bengal LIVE updates | Bengal's COVID death toll crosses 3,500; discharge rate rises to 84.8 percent
The COVID-19 death toll in West Bengal crossed the 3,500-mark to reach 3,510 after 58 more people succumbed to the disease yesterday, a bulletin released by the state health department said.
After 3,248 patients recovered from the infection, the discharge rate improved to 84.86 percent from 84.48 percent a day earlier. The total number of people who have been cured of the infection in the state has reached 1.5 lakh.
The bulletin said that 3,042 fresh cases of the contagion had taken the state’s overall tally to 1.77 lakh. (Input from PTI)
