India and China need to establish “correct strategic understanding” and treat each other as partners, rather than as rivals, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi told India’s external affairs minister S Jaishankar.
A statement by the Chinese foreign ministry said the country is ready to uphold the principle of cordiality and mutual benefit with India.
The two foreign ministers met on August 18 in New Delhi, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to China to attend the annual summit of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
Jaishankar, on his part, said both the neighbours should adopt a "candid and constructive" approach in moving ahead in the engagement after a difficult period and it must be based on mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest.
The minister also pitched for taking forward the de-escalation process in the border areas along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh that witnessed over a four-year face-off between the militaries of the two nations.
