Centre to focus on bringing down use of imported parts in indigenously developed military platforms

The defence ministry will concentrate on significantly reducing the portion of imported ingredients in indigenously developed military platforms and weapons systems such as light combat aircraft Tejas and Akash missiles, officials said on August 10.

The indigenously developed platforms and weapons largely used by the Indian armed forces have various imported components and electronic systems.

To promote the local defence industry in the country, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced on August 9 that the nation will end the import of 101 military systems and weapons like transport aircraft, light combat helicopters, conventional submarines and cruise missiles by 2024.

The negative list featured many products which have either been developed by India or are in the development stage.
