A canopy collapsed outside the Rajkot airport terminal in Gujarat on June 29 amid heavy rainfall. However, nobody was injured in the incident.
This comes a day after a cab driver died and eight people were injured when a portion of a canopy collapsed on cars on Delhi's Terminal 1 following heavy downpour. Flight operations were suspended at the terminal which handles domestic flights, including those by IndiGo and SpiceJet. All operations have been temporarily shifted to Terminal 2 and Terminal 3.
According to Ministry of Civil Aviation sources, the canopy broke during maintenance work to push out water accumulated in it. A detailed report into the matter has been sought in the matter.
In a post on X, the Rajkot airport authorities said that water accumulation was observed on the city side of the canopy at the terminal building at 11.40 am due to heavy rains. "As we came to know about it we gave the information to the civil works department and the area beneath was cordoned off," the authorities said.
The international airport is located at Hirasar, about 30 km from Rajkot city.
"Around 11.55 am, more water accumulated on the canopy amid heavy rains, due to which the canopy fabric tore and fell. No casualties were reported in the incident. The airport civil team is removing the (damaged) canopy," the Rajkot International Airport added.
Civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, who visited the Delhi airport after the roof collapse on Friday, called it a 'very serious' incident and announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the family of the deceased and Rs 3 lakh each for the injured.
According to officials, the roof sheet and the support beams collapsed, damaging four cars parked in the pick-up and drop area of the terminal. The incident was reported to the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) around 5.30 am on Friday.
Monsoon arrived in the national capital on June 28 with the heaviest downpour in 88 years. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rain is likely in the national capital over the weekend. It has issued an 'orange alert' for heavy rain for the next four days.
"Delhi is likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall throughout the day, with an even heavier spell anticipated on Sunday and Monday," the weather department said.
