Bulldozer action: What is it, who started it & why SC frowned at the method

The practice has been criticised by some, with activists questioning how the action can be taken even before allegations against a person are proved.

The Supreme Court on Monday disapproved of the “bulldozer justice” meted out by certain states in criminal cases. The top court said the law does not permit the destruction of the family shelters of even convicts.

“How can anybody’s home be demolished because he is an accused in a case? The law does not permit that… Can it happen even if a person is a convict?” a bench headed by Justice BR Gavai and Justice K Viswanathan said.

The SC bench proposed to lay down certain guidelines on a pan-India basis on the issue of demolition. It posted the matter for hearing on September 17.
