The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has secured a sweeping victory in the 2025 Assam Panchayat elections, consolidating its political dominance in the state. This phenomenal performance marks a significant milestone for the BJP and its allies, particularly in the run-up to the 2026 state Assembly elections.
The BJP-AGP combine won 1,409 out of the 2,192 Anchalik Panchayat seats. The Congress secured 122 seats and others won 41 seats.
The opposition Congress secured 271 seats, while 33 have been won by AIUDF, eight by Raijor Dal, three by Trinamool Congress, two by Assam Jatiya Parishad, one by AAP and 117 by Independents. In Zilla Parishad (ZP), the BJP won 219 seats along with 23 bagged by its ally AGP. The Congress got 37 seats, while three were won by AIUDF, one by Raijor Dal and 10 by Independents, the ASEC data showed.
The panchayat elections took place on May 2 and 7 in Assam's 27 districts for the first time after the delimitation of the constituencies.
In the Anchalik Panchayat Member (APM) segment, the BJP won 1,261 out of 2,192 seats. The AGP secured 184, giving the NDA a commanding share overall. Congress claimed 481 seats, followed by AIUDF with 64, Raijor Dal with 17, Trinamool Congress 4, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) 3, and Aam Aadmi Party 1. Independent candidates won 173 APM seats.
The total seats include 21,920 Gram Panchayat members with 10,883 seats reserved for women. Voting also happened for 2,192 Anchalik Panchayat members with 1,124 reserved for women and 397 Zilla Parishad members with 199 seats reserved for women. As many as 2,912 candidates have won uncontested -– 34 Zilla Parishad members, 311 Anchalik Panchayat members and 2,567 GP ward members.
