The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust will soon begin construction of a 4-kilometre-long security wall around the Ram Mandir to strengthen protection for the temple complex. Standing 14–16 feet high with a three-foot steel fence on top, the wall will include advanced surveillance equipment and watchtowers to prevent any unauthorised entry.
The Rs 80–90 crore project is expected to start within the next 15 days and will take six to eight months to complete. Engineers India Limited has been given the responsibility for its construction.
Trust officials say the wall is meant to address both safety and religious considerations. “This wall will not only ensure the security of the temple but will also reinforce its spiritual sanctity,” said Anil Mishra, a senior member of the Trust. “It will be equipped with modern surveillance features, including barbed wires, electronic sensors, and strategically placed watchtowers. The idea is to leave no gap for any unauthorised intrusion.”
Construction will start from the northern side of the temple complex and proceed in phases until the entire perimeter is covered.
Alert sparked review
The decision follows a security alert received by the Trust in mid-April, prompting authorities to reassess existing arrangements. The message, sent via email, warned of the need to strengthen the temple’s defences. The Trust lodged an FIR with the district police’s cyber cell, which is investigating the matter.
“Security for the Ram Mandir is non-negotiable,” said a senior police official posted in Ayodhya. “This temple is not only a place of worship but also a national symbol. Any lapse in its protection could have serious consequences.”
Currently, the temple complex is guarded by the Uttar Pradesh Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, with entry controlled through metal detectors, baggage scanners, and designated gates. The new wall will add an additional layer of security.
Security experts say the wall is an essential part of a layered defence system for a high-profile religious site. “On peak days, the sheer volume of people creates an opportunity for mischief or worse,” said retired IPS officer Rajiv Singh, who once oversaw security for religious gatherings. “Multiple barriers, controlled entry points, and constant monitoring are essential — and a strong perimeter wall is the first step.”
The wall will integrate with the temple’s existing monitoring systems. CCTV cameras will feed into a central control room, while the watchtowers will give security personnel a clear view of the surroundings.
Devotee and local support
Many visitors and residents have welcomed the plan. “I come here every month from Lucknow with my family,” said Sunita Sharma, a devotee. “It is reassuring to know the temple will be better protected.”
Local shopkeeper Ramesh Tiwari added: “Festivals bring huge crowds, and with them sometimes trouble. A strong wall will keep both the devotees and the neighbourhood peaceful.”
Growing footfall, rising risks
Since the inauguration of the temple’s first phase, Ayodhya has seen a sharp rise in visitors. This surge, while boosting tourism and local business, has also increased the need for stronger crowd control and security measures.
“Whenever you have a site of such high emotional and religious significance, it becomes a potential target for mischief-makers,” said the senior police official. “Strong, visible security acts as a deterrent.”
Once complete, the wall will join other measures to make the Ram Mandir one of the most secure religious sites in the country. “This is about ensuring that future generations can visit and worship here without fear,” Mishra said.
Work is expected to be completed by early next year, with the wall serving as both a physical barrier and a symbol of protection for Ayodhya’s most important temple.
