After the BJP’s strong performance in the Maharashtra local body elections, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has asked party leaders to avoid sharp attacks on the allies.
In several areas, ruling alliance partners—including the BJP, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP—contested against each other.
According to NDTV, Fadnavis advised BJP leaders to maintain restraint and avoid sharp attacks on allies during the civic polls campaign, even if seat-sharing arrangements do not materialise.
The Mahayuti alliance of the BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP swept elections to 288 municipal councils and nagar panchayats across the state. Together, the allies secured 207 president posts, while the opposition alliance of Congress, Shiv Sena UBT and NCP SP was restricted to just 44.
The BJP won 117 president posts, followed by the Sena with 53 and the NCP with 37.
Earlier, Fadnavis said the local body poll results was a trailer of what lies ahead in the upcoming municipal corporation elections. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation election is scheduled for January 15, with results to be declared the following day.
"This year, nearly 3000 of our corporators have been elected. Of the total corporators elected, 48% are from the BJP. This is a record. The people have shown faith in our government... The people have responded to Modi's politics of development and trust. The opposition's strongholds in Nagpur have been demolished. We have made the Saoner Municipal Council Congress-free... In the coming days, we will win the municipal corporation and Zilla Parishad elections," Fadnavis said.
Around 129 municipal council chairpersons have been elected from the BJP. Together, all three alliance parties (Shiv Sena, BJP, and NCP (Ajit Pawar) account for 75% of the city council chairpersons. In terms of corporators, more than 3,300 BJP candidates have been elected, according to Fadnavis.
