Union home minister Amit Shah on Wednesday assuaged concerns over US' reciprocal tariffs, saying that such external pressures would not cause panic among Indian citizens.
Speaking to Network18 Group Editor-in-Chief Rahul Joshi at the Rising Bharat Summit in New Delhi, Shah said that it is too soon to determine the impact of Trump tariffs but asserted that India's economy is resilient to such pressures.
Asked about the impact of Trump tariffs, Shah said: "It's too soon to determine the impact. India not the only country facing tariffs. Several countries are facing tariffs ... Maybe our goods can be exported to other countries too."
He, however, added that the US tariff war is quite a complex issue and it is not wise to determine its impact in haste.
He also emphasized that India’s economy is resilient and assured that such external pressures would not cause panic among Indian citizens.
Earlier, commerce minister Piyush Goyal said that India will work with the United States to secure exemptions from President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs.
Trump's move to levy steeper tariffs on India is part of his larger so-called reciprocal duties on his countries trading partners. These duties came into effect on April 9.
