Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta found herself at the center of controversy after her recent comments about air quality monitoring drew sharp criticism from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) with the opposition party attacking the BJP Government for capital's air pollution crisis.
AAP circulated videos on social media platforms showing the chief minister discussing Delhi's pollution, in which she appears to describe AQI as 'temperature'. The clips also captured her stating that 'AQI can be measured with any instrument'.
Taking aim at the chief minister's comment on air quality metrics, AAP posted a meme video with the caption -- "AQI kam karna tha… madam ne IQ kam kar liya."
Despite the political firestorm, Gupta assured Delhi residents that her government is taking action on all fronts to tackle pollution in the National Capital. She emphasized that the fight against pollution in Delhi is ongoing in a continuous mission mode.
Addressing reporters, the chief minister outlined various measures being implemented. She explained that work to install mist at electric poles is ongoing to help reduce pollution, adding that smoke, dust, vehicle emissions, open garbage burning, and wood burning together create a layer of pollution in the air. She stressed that the Delhi Government is working on each element which contributes to pollution and that the government is active on every front to stop this.
Through a post on X, Gupta highlighted that hundreds of sprinklers are being used to wash the city's Ring Road. She noted that this road cleaning is happening at regular intervals, thus playing a crucial role in reducing dust and pollution.
In her message on social media, she wrote that for the first time in Delhi, hundreds of sprinkler vehicles are washing the capital's Ring Road, describing the mission as one for all - pollution control. She stated that the government is fully alert and committed at every level to wage a decisive war against pollution, explaining that through these sprinkler vehicles on the Ring Road, road washing is being carried out at regular intervals, which is helping to reduce dust and pollution. She called this initiative an effective step towards improving air quality and a reflection of the government's strong resolve to provide citizens with a clean environment.
Earlier on Saturday, the chief minister took part in a road-cleaning and washing campaign organised by the Public Works Department at the Khyber Pass Square located in Civil Lines. Cabinet Minister Ravindra Indraj Singh and MLA Shri Surya Prakash Khatri also participated in the campaign.
Posting about the event, Gupta described it as an important step towards making Delhi pollution-free and ensuring dust control. She noted that regular road washing, mechanical cleaning, and ground monitoring in the city are being carried out with utmost speed and seriousness, adding that the war against pollution - Delhi's war continues unabated.
