Information technology (IT) firm Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) are investing in Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), according to Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
“Given the capability that our Indian IT industry has, and given from what we are hearing about Infosys investing into GPUs, TCS investing into this, they are taking a large-scale training of their team members,” Singh said at the Accel AI Summit, 2025 on June 4 in Bengaluru.
He added that there is a need for enhancing their capabilities, and he expects cash-heavy IT players to come up with AI products, applications, and use cases in various sectors.
“Otherwise, for them to survive without AI, it will be very, very difficult. But the whole world is going towards adoption of AI and even applications, use cases, the way you write code, the way you implement products, the way you architect solutions, the way you deliver even SaaS products. So that will be something that will be needed, and I'm sure they will definitely be able to open it up,” Singh further added.
He was responding to a question on whether enterprises sitting on huge cash will work towards India's foundational models, as the majority of the work is being driven by startups and researchers currently.
Meanwhile, the IndiaAI mission has earmarked over 18,000 advanced GPUs for the sovereign foundational model. Of this, Yotta is a significant player as it will provide 50 percent of the compute capacity.
For context, the government on May 30 announced the names of three more startups selected to build India’s first home-grown artificial intelligence (AI) foundational model: SoketAI, Gnani.ai, and Gan AI. Earlier, on April 26, 2025, Sarvam AI was shortlisted for the same initiative.
The computing facility has exceeded initial expectations, securing nearly 19,000 GPUs instead of the originally planned 10,000.
Singh added that by the next round, which is closing on the June 9, 2025, he expects another 15,000-16,000 GPUs to be procured. “So in the next six months, we will have around 50,000 GPUs, which will be secured through the AI mission.”
He added that other private entities are also getting GPUs, such as academia. “The overall availability in India of GPUs will go much beyond 50,000,” he added.
Singh also iterated that the mission has created the opportunity to bring talent back to India. “I hope young talent sees this and comes back to India. This will also be a major achievement,” he told Moneycontrol earlier.
