Year 2024: Sticky food inflation and stingy consumption

The spike in food inflation coincided with an election year when expenditure by the government typically slows down, a trend seen especially in the first half of the current financial year ending March 2025. This pulled down private consumption, especially in urban areas.

Food inflation was primarily driven up by vegetables during the eleven months of 2024. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for December will be released on January 12.
