Commuters in Bengaluru will soon be able to buy metro as well as BMTC bus tickets through mobility apps Namma Yatri and Tummoc, as the city moves towards integration of its public transport system.
The two apps already offer auto and cab rides, which take care of the last-mile connectivity.
The new features, developed using open transit data from the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), will be unveiled this week under the Enroute: Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) Challenge, an initiative to encourage tech-driven mobility solutions.
The challenge was led by Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI), WRI and Villgro with support from BMTC and BMRCL. Startups were invited to build mobility solutions for Bengaluru City and out of 50 applications, Namma Yatri and Tummoc were declared the winners.
"Today's launch is a big step towards improving congestion in the city. I think one of the biggest highlights of this is that while there is intent and policy it is the open data which has enabled this launch," Karnataka’s minister for electronics and IT/BT Priyank Kharge said as he announced the winners on July 10.
He urged BMTC and BMRCL to work towards open data development and integration.
Each winner received a grant of Rs 30 lakhs as grant to build the feature. By enabling users to access real-time route planning and booking across multiple modes of transport within a single app, the updates aim to simplify daily commutes and reduce friction in switching between services.
Officials it was a significant step in Bengaluru’s effort to open up government transport data and support ecosystem-led innovation in urban mobility.
"The government's message is very clear. If you are solving for Karnataka,for the people...the government is always here to support and enable this," Kharge said.
Recently, the government announced that Bengaluru metro commuters can buy tickets through nine mobility apps, with BMRCL joining government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).
“Commuters can now purchase BMRCL QR tickets via nine popular consumer-facing apps: EaseMyTrip, Highway Delite, Miles & Kilometres (via Telegram), Namma Yatri, OneTicket, Rapido, RedBus, Tummoc, and Yatri City Travel Guide,” BMRCL said on July 8.
